Hi all. I thought this was important in case any other customers plan on installing Oxwall via Softaculous. We had a customer who was trying to install Oxwall and it wouldn’t go. After hours of troubleshooting, we were finally able to get it.

For some reason Softaculous didn’t set the permissions properly to a folder during the install. The template_c folder within the “ow_smarty” folder is supposed to be set to CHMOD 777, but it was set to something like 754, which is not correct.

If you plan on installing Oxwall and run into problems, please feel free to open a support ticket. We’d be more than happy to assist!

I have oddly never heard of Oxwall before. Most of the time when Softaculous rolls something out I stay on top of it but I mussed have missed this. Is it similar to Joomla?

I’ve never heard it before either, oldans. I will be sure to check it out and see what it offers. It’s a good thing you found the problem. Has Softaculous fixed the problem on their end for future customers?

This is new to me as well, Braedan. Do you know how many people were affected by this bug? How long before Softaculous figured it out?

No, Oxwall is a PHP based platform for social networking, and comes with a common core of features.

Errors such as the permissions being incorrect can take a great deal of debugging, especially when you suspect something else to be the cause of your error

The last thing you want to spend time on is investigating why something isn’t installing right. Kudos to you for the efficiency in which you help out your customers and for giving a heads up to us as well.

It really is reassuring that we won’t have to spend hours debugging issues like this alone, instead knowing that we have support to work through them rapidly and move on with our day.

Or possibly that we won’t even need to use that support. Once an issue is known, it tends to be fairly rapidly dealt with so that it ceases to be an issue for most installs.

It’s good to know you found the problem and gave Softaculous the heads up. It’s frustrating when something is working the way it should and you took the time to work with your client to figure it out.

I’ve had a few issues with apps like this. There for a while I was having issues with my email application not setting permissions correctly. At least you got it fixed and can warn others!
