How to choose the colors for your website

If you are thinking about designing a website, one of the most important aspects you need to consider are colors.

Colors can make a website look sophisticated, complex, and well designed – it’s a problem of mixing and matching hues.

Lucky for us, Adobe has made a color wheel that can be easily used by anyone.  Now, all you need to do is choose your main color and Adobe makes the perfect match!what color should i use for website

One of the rules you need to follow is the simple 60-30-10: 60% of one color and another 30% and 10% of contrasting and accents.

You can visit Adobe color wheel here – Adobe Color and choose your main color and the Triad option – the program does the rest! Now you know what colors you should use so that your website won’t be hard on the eye, but harmonious and relaxing.

Also, you might want to look up some of the color properties: there are hard and soft colors, some that make you tired and agitated, some that are calm and induce a relaxing state. Depending on what you want to transmit, you should make sure that you have the right color.

Good luck!

Creating an Under Construction or Coming Soon page

Let’s say that you want to create a website and you don’t want random visitors to “take a look” at your site until it is ready.  In this case, you may want to place an “Under Construction” or “Coming Soon” page in place.

This article will guide you on how to create and set up a placeholder page so that you can work on your site in the background.

  1. Login to your cPanel
  2. Access File Manager. Be sure to navigate to the root folder for the domain you are working with. If it is the primary domain, use public_html.
  3. Click on New File, an icon found in the toolbar at the top of the page.
  4. Next, give the file a name. In this example, we will use comingsoon.html. Click on the Create File button to finish the creation process. Note this simply creates an empty file.
  5. Now we need to edit the empty file. Highlight the filename and then click on HTML Editor. This feature allows you to create the page visually, no coding needed. You can make it in anyway you want. At this moment, we will make it very in a very simplistic mode.
  6. Once you have designed your page, click on the Save button, located in the upper left of the tool bar.
  7. Now that you have created the page, you need to set the file name as your default for your website. Those instructions are found in our article on ” How to change your default index page in .htaccess ” .

What happens during a migration

There are two types of migration: direct migration and failover migration. Direct migration is when the old server is copied directly to the new server. Failover migration is when the old server has been taken offline and a temporary backup server has been running. The offline server will be copied to the new server.

Frequently asked questions:

Will my primary domain stay the same?

Yes, the domains will not change. Since the migration is basically a clone of the file and account structures all cPanels will retain their primary domain name.

Will addon domains stay in place?

Yes, addon domains will stay in place.

Will my IPs change

Any Dedicated IPs that are on cPanel accounts will stay the same. These are normally in place for SSLs.

Will my SSLs stay the same?

Yes. These should all remain the same during the migration so SSLs will not need to be rekeyed.

Will my databases stay the same?

Direct migration – The databases on the cPanel will be copied over exactly as they were on the original server. This means they will retain all data, naming conventions, usernames, permissions, etc.

Failover migration – The databases on the cPanel will be copied over exactly as they were on the original server. However the data that has been collected or changed on the failover server will not be copied over. It may need to be manually moved.

Will I lose any emails?

Direct migration – No. Any email that was on the old server will be copied over to the new server.

Failover migration – Any emails that were received and sent on the failover server will not be copied directly to the new server. The emails on the failover server will need to be manually moved.

What may change during the transfer:

Server name

If the server has a new name then all references to that name will need to be changed.

Shared IP Address

Though we will do our best not to change it, there is a low possibility the shared IP for your cPanel accounts could change. Any software refernecing the main IP directly will need to be changed to reference the new IP. This will be able to be seen in your cPanel once the copy has taken place.

Software you may need to change for the above issues

Here is a list of software you may need to inspect. These may have settings that use the server name or IP address.

  • Email clients (Outlook, MacMail, Gmail, etc)
  • Any builder program that connects to the server (DreamWeaver, FrontPage, iPage, Premium Website Builder)
  • FTP clients (FileZilla, Cyberduck, WSftp, etc)

How to Remove .html from Your URL

It’s 2013 and there’s no reason to have .html showing on the end of each URL on your website. There’s a simple solution to remove .html from your website to come across more professional.

You need to create an .htaccess file. In order to do that, open Notepad on your computer. In Notepad, input the following:

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} /([^.]+)\.html [NC]
RewriteRule ^ /%1 [NC,L,R]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.html -f
RewriteRule ^ %{REQUEST_URI}.html [NC,L]

In order to save the file, go to File > Save As. For the file name, call it “.htaccess” without the quotes. Change the Save As Type to “All Files.”

Once you have the file saved, upload it to your public_html folder on the server. The last thing you’ll have to do is remove .html from all of your file names.

How to Backup Your Computer’s Files

I thought this would be a pretty good topic to bring up since I have first-hand experience about losing files on my computer. I’ve had numerous hard drives crash (too many to count) and I’ve accidentally deleted files. I learned from my lessons fast and am here to share a great tool with you!

I’ve often setup RAID-1 in my home computers to help retain data should a hard drive fail. Explaining RAID setup is beyond the scope of this post, but basically RAID-1 requires 2 hard drives. Whatever is copied on hard drive 1 is copied to hard drive 2. What happens though if your house were to burn down, there’s flooding in your region, or  lightning strikes your computer? You can still lose all your data!

I now use a little tool called CrashPlan. This is not a free tool and it does cost a small monthly subscription. It costs $5.99/month or as little as $3.95/month if you pre-pay 4 years in advance. CrashPlan offers UNLIMITED disk space and will backup whatever folders you have the program monitor on your computer. Currently I have 4TB backed up with CrashPlan and I keep transferring more and more data to them each week.

In order to use CrashPlan, you do have to have a high speed Internet connection. I currently have 10Mbps upload speed and CrashPlan typically transfers data at about 1.9Mbps up to 5.5Mbps. Their servers are located here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In order to backup 4TB of data it literally took months and months. If you have a lot of data, be prepared to leave your computer on 24/7 until your backup is complete!

If you can afford the minimal monthly fee, I would HIGHLY recommend CrashPlan to anyone that is worried about losing photos, music, videos, etc. It’s happened to me twice now and I vowed I would never do it again.

Do you use something else for backing up your files? What do you think of CrashPlan? Let me know in the comments!
